Challenges of the Pineywoods: Fire, Biodiversity and Fragmentation

Welcome to the Pineywoods and Huntsville, Texas, for the 2017 annual symposium of the Native Plant Society of Texas. The symposium committee has worked hard to pull together great native plant tours, workshops, and speakers for this year’s meeting. Following a stop or two on incoming tours to Huntsville, we hope to see you Thursday afternoon, November 2, at the base of the Sam Houston statue, which according to the Sam Houston Statue Visitor Center, “is the world’s tallest statue of an American Hero at 67 feet tall on a 10-foot sunset granite base”. We will be hosted to a wine and cheese welcome Thursday from 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm at the visitor center’s adjacent office which is located in a restored dogtrot home. Friday morning and Saturday we convene at the Walker Education Center on the grounds of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum. A full slate of workshops will occur Saturday afternoon, we hope to have several that you will find to be must attends. We have lined up excellent speakers and presentations related to the Pineywoods region of East Texas. Don’t forget to bring an item or two for the silent auction that benefits our scholarship programs.
