Will Big Tooth Maples survive in the Austin area? If so, is there a way for Austinites to adopt Big Tooth Maples?

    • Suzanne Young says:

Yes, bigtooth maples will survive in Austin. I believe it is one of the trees that the City of Austin recommends. The Bigtooth Maples for Boerne Tree Awards are restricted to those who live withing the city limits of Boerne. We are trying to create a cluster of maples for fall foliage tours. We purchase our trees from Love Creek Orchards in Medina http://www.lovecreekorchards.com. They may be able to deliver them to Austin.
Thank you for your interest in Bigtooth Maples. Please visit our website for care instructions. Good luck! Suzanne Young 830-249-8240

          Dear Carolyn,
Our next giveaway will be next November; however, you can send in your application anytime. The deadline for all applications is Oct. 1. Many of your neighbors have received Bigtooth maples. The application is on our website. I can forward one to you if you are unable to find it.

I have been growing Bigtooth’s in Austin fro a number of years at our old property and new property on the West side of town. In both locations they are doing fine. Due to the rocky and stubborn soil, I started with smaller trees purchased at the Mostly Native Plant Sales in Boerne.

I have also had good luck with Shantung maples in the Austin area.

      • Suzanne Young says:

The Cibolo Nature Center’s Mostly Native Plant Sale is April 2,
9:00 am – 3:00 pm at the Kendall County Fairgrounds on Hwy 46 E.
        Hope to see you there!
        Suzanne
