Projects and Volunteer Activities

Plant Lists

The Williamson County and Austin chapters are creating a reference of plant lists and databases for areas in and around central Texas.

Seed collecting

Members frequently organize seed collecting trips around the area.  Contact the chapter seed collecting contact for more information.

Rescue sites

The chapter frequently searches for and obtains permission to rescue plants from sites threatened by imminent construction.  Rescued plants are used for projects, plant sales, and by members for personal use.  Contact the chapter rescue site contact for more information.

NPSOT booth at the Wildflower Center Plant Sales

The chapter sells plants at the plant sales to raise funds, and to also advocate and educate about native plants. Contact the Volunteer Coordinator for more information.

Past Projects

Georgetown Public Library Garden

The chapter created and maintained a native plant demonstration garden in the courtyard of the Georgetown Public Library. This garden was originally created in 1997, but was completely redone in 2003 to make it a little more structured and more appealing to new converts to native plants.

The Wacky Weeders have officially turned over the maintenance of the garden to the City of Georgetown. and have written a maintenance guide that is available here in PDF format: Library Garden Maintenance Guide.

We will continue to work with the city in an advisory capacity.  All questions or concerns should be directed through Dennis Perz at 512-864-3828.  We thank everyone who has ever helped with project since 1998.

Grow Native Plants! Radio Announcements

The Austin and Williamson County chapters sponsored local radio announcements advocating native plants.
