The Highland Lakes Chapter was named as the NPSOT Chapter of the Year for 2009 at the annual Awards Banquet in Wichita Falls on October 17 .  Gailon Hardin recognized the chapter for their efforts to obtain legislation designating a Texas Native Plant Week.  A bill was signed by Governor Perry this summer which calls for a Texas Native Plant Week to be celebrated the third week of each October.

The award is given by the outgoing President of the Society on the basis of  chapter demonstration of leadership, chapter activities that promote the purposes of NPSOT, and chapter fun with plants.  The Highland Lakes Chapter is privileged to have possession of the Chapter of the Year quilt for one year, after which it will be returned to be awarded to next year’s award winner.  The quilt was made by Kate Hillhouse, a former president of the Society.
